The Department of Chinese Traditional Instrumental Music of the Shenyang Conservatory of Music was founded in 1956, which is the earliest department established among professional music colleges in China. There are many well-known national instrumental music educators and performers have taught here, such as the representatives of Shandong Zheng instrument music educator Zhao Yuzha, Sichuan Guqin instrument representatives music educator Gu Meigeng, Northeast Dulcimer representative music educator Su Ying, famous Guzheng performers, music educators Cao Zheng, famous Erhu performer, music educator Zhu Yuzhi, Tang Yubin and cultivate a number of leading professional academic frontiers of academic leaders and many performer and educator. Previous department head: Zhu Yuzhi, Tang Yubin, Guo Junming, Guan Wenju, Liu Gang, Zhao Duoliang. The current department head is Prof. Wei Guo.


The Department of Chinese Traditional Instrumental Music has 22 teachers, including 3 professors and 7 associate professors. The Chinese traditional instrumental music system consists of a string instruments, plucked instruments, wind and percussion music instruments, chamber music and five teaching and research sections of art direction, containing the Erhu, Banhu, Pipa, Guzheng, Konghou, Liu-chin, Ruan, Chinese dulcimer, Guqin, Sanxian, Bamboo flute, Suona horn, Sheng, Chinese traditional percussion sum to 17 professional specializations. There are 341 undergraduates and 120 postgraduates. The faculty of department has a reasonable academic structure and rich teaching experience, of which 65% of the totals are teachers with a master’s degree or above.


Over the years, the department has followed the connotation requirements of talent training in the new era, with the purpose of cultivating socialist builders and successors with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physique, beauty and labor, as well as the fundamental task of cultivating senior talents with lofty virtue, outstanding ability and outstanding learning, and taking on the responsibility of complex performance and teaching direction with feelings. In recent years, our department’s teachers and students have won many awards in international and national professional competitions, and made outstanding achievements in scientific research and artistic practice. It is a characteristic undergraduate major of Liaoning province and a key major of Shenyang Conservatory of Music.


In 2020 for the further implementation of the Chinese Communist Party Liaoning Provincial Party Committee, Provincial People’s Government on the implementation of the Party Central Committee and State Council on promoting the Chinese culture influence and the construction and development of our country’s international communication capacity decision deployment plan requirements, the Shenyang Conservatory of Music set up "the Belt and Road Initiatives National Instrument Alliance", led by director Wei Guo declare to instrumental music research center for Liaoning Province Education Department for approval. As the undertaking unit, the Chinese Traditional Instrumental Music Department accurately grasps the new situation and new tasks faced by the development of ethnic instrumental music, and closely follows the new ideas, new thoughts and new viewpoints of educational reform and development in the new era. Under the leadership of Director Wei Guo, all the teachers are rooted in the tradition, based on the contemporary and achieve innovative development in terms of specialty setting, curriculum reform, and talent training and teacher team construction.
