The Orchestral Instruments Department, a professional discipline integrating orchestral instrumental music teaching, research and performance in Shenyang Conservatory of Music, is one of the most important teaching and research institutions of music performance in our college. The Department of Orchestral Instruments was established in 1956, and its predecessor was the Instrumental Music Department of the former Northeast Music College, with 315 students and 41 teachers at present. The previous department heads were Chen Ruyi, Xu Huimin, Liu Shaoli, Wang Dewen, Guan Qingwu, Quan Taicheng, Dong Dejun and Yang Yuan. The Current department leaders are Xie Jiang, a deputy director (in charge of the work), Chen Lu, secretary of the general party branch, Wang Chunsheng, deputy secretary of the general party branch, and Guan Lihong, a deputy director.


Over the years, the Department of Orchestral Music insists on establishing morality, strengthening the quality of talent cultivation, and forming an educational and teaching system covering two levels of undergraduate and postgraduate students based on teaching and guided by scientific research. The Department of Orchestral Music has a strong faculty and scientific research teams, and some teachers have been awarded the special allowance of the State Council, Yongxi Outstanding Music Education Award, the Excellent experts of Liaoning Province, the famous teachers of Higher education in Liaoning Province, the professional leaders of general higher education in Liaoning Province, the young top-notch talent of Liaoning province “Xingliao Talent Scheme”, the “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Project” in Liaoning province, outstanding experts in Shenyang and many other rewards. Some of the teachers have held important positions in national professional associations and judges of domestic and international professional events. The Department of Orchestral Instruments has also been honored as an advanced group of "Five Educators", Excellent Undergraduate Teaching Team and advanced groups many times.


During the practice and exploration of several generations of orchestral musicians for more than half a century, the Department of Orchestral Instruments has accumulated rich teaching experience and scientific research achievements, cultivated many excellent music performance talents and made positive contributions to the construction of national and local music culture and education. Such as Professor Zhang Qian, a doctoral supervisor and music theorist of the Central Conservatory of Music, Professor Wang Zhenshan, a violinist and educator, Professor Berlin, a trumpet player and educator, Wu Yang, the principal of the China Philharmonic Orchestra and violinist, Dai Zhonghui, a trumpet professor of the Central Conservatory of Music, Luo Mei Mei, the principal of the Florida Symphony Orchestra and violinist, Yuan Bo, the principal of the double bass of the Geneva Opera Orchestra and performer, Nie Bing, a director of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and violinist, and other outstanding alumni.


In recent years, many teachers and students have won awards in important professional competitions at home and abroad, such as the ministry of culture second prize in the second Violin Performance Competition, third prize in the 7th Violin Performance Competition; Silver Award in the Youth Violin Competition at the 2018 Singapore International String Music Festival; The first prize of the Northeast Region of the Hong Kong International Violin Competition; The first prize of the flute and clarinet specialty of the 2008 National Woodwind Competition of the Ministry of Culture; Excellence Award for Piano and String Duet in the Duet class of the 9th China Music Golden Bell Award of the Chinese Musicians Association; Second Prize in the Trombone Professional Group of the 11th Brass Solo Competition of the Central Conservatory of Music, Second Prize in the Professional Group of the 13th Chamber Music Brass Trombone Quartet Competition, First Prize in the Trombone Quartet Professional Group and First Prize in the Brass Decathlon of the 2nd Northeast Wind Music Competition; Gold Prize in the Marimba Solo in the Performer Group of the 2018 PAS Singapore International Percussion Arts Festival Western Percussion Competition; Bronze Prize in the Marimba Competition in the Professional Adult Group of the 2018 China International Percussion Arts Festival (Western Percussion), etc.


The Department has always been adhering to the fine tradition of "combining teaching and practice" of Lu Xun Academy of Arts, actively promoting the development of teaching and practice activities, and has established the "Shenyang Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra", which is mainly composed of students from the department. The Orchestra has undertaken a number of major performance tasks of the Conservatory, and has been active on the domestic and foreign music stages, such as the "Forum of Orchestra Directors and Symphony Concert Performance of Nine Conservatory of Music”, "Justice and Peace - Large-scale Symphonic Poems and Paintings in Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s Anti-Japanese War and the World Anti-Fascist War Special Program", “Fight for the Motherland’ - Shostakovich’s Seventh (Leningrad) Symphony", the large-scale national opera “Star’s Fire" and the New Year Symphony Concert as the brand of the academy, the symphony concert of "My Motherland and Me" with a thousand people, the concert of "My Motherland and Me" to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the provincial Party Committee Propaganda Department "My Motherland and Me- Liaoning Province to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China special program" performance and recording, etc. Orchestra groups have also participated in many important music festivals at home and abroad, including Beijing International Music Festival, Seoul International Symphonic Music Festival in Korea, Shenyang International Music Week, Dalian International Music Festival, Shenyang Chinese and foreign music cultural exchange exhibition, etc.


Based on its professional characteristics, the Department of Orchestral Instruments attaches importance to international exchanges and adheres to the path of internationalized education. Every year, our department regularly invite domestic and foreign famous performers to give lectures or hold concerts. In recent years, dozens of musicians from the United States, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Israel, The Netherlands, Hungary, Japan, South Korea, Belgium and Belarus have come to the department for academic exchange activities. At the same time, the department also frequently conducts the overseas exchange, lectures and performance activities.


In the future, students and teachers of Orchestral Instruments Department will continue to abide by the school motto of "Tension, Seriousness, Diligence and Modesty", and adhere to the school philosophy of rooting from the nation, integrating into the era, highlighting the highlighting features and serving the society", cultivate artistic talents with both virtues and talents, develop and expand the symphony orchestra, create and rehearse fine works, and contribute to the conservatory’s construction of a "high-level, distinctive and internationalized first-rate" conservatory and the development and prosperity of socialist literature and arts.
